Local amenities

Situated almost in the centre of the Forest of Dean, Coleford is the ideal place from which to enjoy the many attractions the Forest offers. Surrounded by smaller villages, the town is the area’s main shopping centre, and as well as ‘Co-op’ and ‘Lidl’ supermarkets and a smaller ‘Tesco Local’, is supported by many small independent retailers, (Local services) cafés, restaurants, pubs, hotels and a two screen cinema. There is only one bank (Lloyds), but the Post Office (located inside the ‘Tesco Local’) also offers some banking facilities.

Health services are supported by two medical practices, both currently situated near the town centre. Plans are in hand to merge these into a single practice, based in a new purpose-built Health Centre near the Great Oaks Hospice. Accident & Emergency (A&E) facilities are normally available at the Dilke Memorial Hospital (Tel: 0300 421 8640), on the B4226 road between Coleford and Cinderford, or at the Lydney & District Hospital, Grove Road Lydney (Tel: 0300 421 8722). At present however, the Dilke hospital is closed due to the ‘Covid’ pandemic and the nearest 24hr A&E facilities are at the Gloucester Royal Hospital, Great Western Rd, Gloucester (Tel: 03004 222 222), or at the County Hospital, Stonebow Rd, Hereford (Tel: 01432 355 444). Coleford also has two dental practices, and two veterinary practices.

The downloadable map (click) below, shows the locations of many local facilities.

Coleford is also the administrative ‘capital’ of the Forest, with the Forest of Dean District Council headquarters based here, as well as our own Town Council.
