Heart-starting hope for the Estate!

TRRA secures promise of Community Phone Box

The local council has recently approached the TRRA to offer us an old traditional red phone box to refurbish for Community use. The committee has set to work on arranging plans for its refurbishment, location, and use. A number of ideas have been put forward such as a book or puzzle exchange, and a ‘Red Box’ – which offers free menstrual items to help young girls fight period poverty.

Taking inspiration from other local communities, the committee has decided that it would be great if it could also house an Automatic Emergency Defibrillator (AED) for the Estate. A defibrillator is an emergency use device that can help save the life of someone experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest.

Anyone who happened to watch the Denmark match during the recent European Football Competition will understand that any age can benefit from quick access to an AED. Our chair, David Barnham and committee member, Simon Oldroyd, have approached the local council and Stonewater Housing Association for monetary support – so watch this space! The requested funds are unlikely to fully cover all aspects of the refurbishment, and we hope to arrange further fundraising in due course.

On that note, the TRRA committee has been working to organise a community event, with the aim of getting everyone together following a difficult 18 months. This will also be a great opportunity to raise some money for this good cause.

On Sunday 29th August, we will be hosting a ‘Family Fun Day’ in and around the ‘Lake Caudwell’ area of the estate and the Children’s Play Park. The event will run from 11am-3pm and include free face painting for children, children’s sports day activities and a

much-anticipated ‘Caudwell Crufts’ Fun Dog Show which will see local pooches awarded prizes for things such as the ‘Best Dressed’ pooch – so be sure to bring your dog along to enter into the show! We are welcoming everyone from the estate to join in for the day and come and have some fun in the sun (we hope!) There will also be a traditional ‘Splat the Rat’, a home baking stand, sweets for the children, a tombola and some fun sporting activities for the kids and grown-ups alike.

We hope to see you there!

*** Volunteer bakers needed!! ***

Jean Hayman will be running the home baking stand at the fête, and would really appreciate some assistance with stocking it! Here’s a chance to look out your favourite recipes, and try them out on a wider audience!
Please email Jean at: jean.hayman@thurstansrise.org.uk if you’d be willing to help out!

*** Window Posters ***

If you would like to help to ‘spread the word’ and help us make the ‘Fun Day’ a success, you might like to download and print one of these posters, and display it in your front window (or some other prominent place!)
