Amazing bank holiday fun!

by, Peter Hayman

A brilliantly sunny day, together with the relaxation of most ‘Covid’ restrictions, meant that our long-awaited community ‘Fun Day’ on Sunday 29th August, was fantastically well supported – with upwards of 100 people enjoying the festivities.

The attractions on offer included, children’s games and races, free face-painting, a fun dog-show, a Tombola, a home-baking stall and free hot-dogs. (Many thanks to the Co-op for donating the sausages!)

‘Gimli’ the dwarf owl

The stars of the show were undoubtedly the 6 beautiful owls provided by ‘Little Owlets’ of Lydney, which both children and adults were able to handle.

Thanks also to Alex and ‘Si’ Shipley, for bringing along their amazing ‘Rockin’ Horse’ mobile bar to provide much needed liquid refreshment on a hot day!

The ‘Rockin’ Horse’

This was our first opportunity to get the whole estate together since the ‘TRRA’ was formed in February last year, shortly before the first ‘lockdown’ was imposed. Coleford Town Council and Stonewater Housing Association both showed their support for our community event, and it was rewarding to see so many residents taking part in the activities.

The TRRA committee is grateful for all the positive feedback on the residents’ ‘Facebook’ group. Here is a selection:

‘It was so lovely to meet people I hadn’t met; all the children were so polite.’
‘Thank you so much, my boys had a blast!’
‘Thank you to everyone who made today happen! What a fantastic turnout!’
‘Thank you so much for all your hard work. TRRA rock!’

The ‘Fun Day’ itself was not intended as a fund-raising event – it was only intended to cover its own expenses.

We did, however, exceed our expectations, and raised almost £100, which will hopefully ‘kick-start’ our next project, to refurbish an old red telephone box for community use. We hope to use it (in part) to accommodate an emergency defibrillator device (AED) as described in Donna Albon’s recent update. More on this later.

In the meantime, we must thank all the ‘volunteers’ who worked so hard to make the day a success, but most of all, thanks to all of you who showed your support on the day. Many of you have asked if we will be having another such event, and I think the answer will be a resounding – YES!!!
